Hemingway warned, "Never think war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime." Â The Devils of Eden echoes those words throughout its introspective look at the modern battle field. Â You won't find the common glorifications that decorate most war stories. Â Holsworth gutwrenchingly exposes the actions and psyches of the 21st century soldier as he follows a group of reconnaissance paratroopers during a tragic deployment at a remote firebase in the Paktia Province of Eastern Afghanistan. Â This novel is unrivaled in its time and will serve as an honest depiction of America's War on Terror for generations to come.

The Devils of Eden (9780983487494) Joseph Holsworth Books Reviews
This story was so enlightening to read, something you don't get to hear first hand from veterans. The day to day things that really happen, you can't just ask about. The daily struggles and the frame of mind that soldiers go through. This was an incredible read, I couldn't put it down. Definitely a must read for this generation.
I am not the reader type. But I could not put it down once I started. This is my friend, Jody's first book. There was so much I wanted to ask him about, about his time in the service, but couldn't muster up the questions, in this book. It's a great read. Real life feelings and action. Would definitly recommended this book to readers and non readers.
I usually do not read these types of books. However, I knew the author. I really enjoyed it. I cried a bit and now want to ask him more about it, I am sure that isn't appropriate. There were a small amount of grammar errors, but I did not think it took away from the story. The book mostly made me angry at the military tactics used. I also liked the play on words in the title, I was not expecting that.
Joseph Holsworth is a find young writer. This is his first novel, I'm sure it won't be his last. Very truthful, candid and sometimes explicit sense of being there as his unit held a remote position in Afghanistan. I think it is valuable both for Vets and non-military to read.
The Devils of Eden has a dark hook near the beginning which exposes readers to the realities common soldiers must endure. Then the author ventilates the reader with the main character demonstrating subtle mental growth while revealing a topsy-turvy military mindset, insights into where America may have taken a wrong turn, while also aerating how Afghani's view us as duplicitous as well as the perilous position they find themselves in before returning us to the absurdities of war. Some may find the gritty language (and occasional editing errors) difficult to get through.
Not only is this novel an extraordinarily well written piece of literature, but it is an absolute must read. From intense human to human contact, gripping action scenes, to heartbreaking social commentary, this story is unique to any other war novel to date. The realities portrayed in this story capture what the life of a paratrooper is actually like, but unique to itself, the glory of war and patriotism is left behind. The reality of the war our generation continues to live through is bleak. Afghanis and Americans alike will be affected for centuries to come. This novel hits on all of these subjects and so much more. It is truly a compelling and fantastic read and most important, it pinpoints a point of view that has been hidden from war novels for so long.
Before I heard about this book, I was not generally interested in reading a novel about war. I had seen several popular media films that glorify war and America's presence in the Middle East and quite frankly I was bored of the hearing the same story over and over again. However, as soon as I started the prologue, it was clear that this book was going to be a different story. It was honest. The author does not try to glorify his actions or motives. I finished the book in 3 days. Truthfully, I was reading so that I could get to the happy ending, but as the writing is truthful, there was no happy ending, just reality. I highly recommend this book to anyone even remotely interested in anti-war literature, or even those with a genuine interest in literature. It was enlightening and well-written.
I think the story written shows a young boy going into the armed forces, and a true man coming out of it. We at home never can really understand what it is like because we are at home doing the same things we always do in the safety of our country. Joseph shows the indifference and numbness toward the Afghans most of the men had so they could just do their job and get out. That he showed he could be a real man by defending the girls that were only hungry vs the man who used that hunger for his own self, was the telling value he had. He may have been a war mongrel going in, but he came out a different man. I am very proud to say I know this young man and knew he had a story to tell a few years ago but was too volatile to be able to anything but try and decompress after living the life of a fighting soldier.
