Author Interview

Why such a fascination with the dead and ghost stories?
I grew up listening to ghost stories from my family. My granny’s property was next door to an old churchyard and you could see the headstones through the trees separating the two properties. She’d tell us about haints (spirits) that would wander over and mess with the knick-knacks she had. She also used to tell a story about my how my grandfather’s ghost would lay down on the bed next to her sometimes. Said the old iron bed would squeak. I still get chills when I think about it.

You started out writing fantasy, why the switch to suspense? Funny you mention that. I actually started out writing scary stories. I wasn’t sure people would want to read them, so I wrote my second love, fantasy. About a year ago a friend of mine asked me whatever happened to those ghost stories you used to write. She told me I should start publishing them too, and so here we are.

Why stories featuring a psychic who can see the dead? Well, like most of my characters, she just popped into my head one day and wouldn’t shut up. I thought it would be interesting to write about her life and about the South Carolina coast. I lived there for fourteen years and know the landscape really well. I also have family that’s a lot like hers – all up in your business but that loves you fiercely.

Who would enjoy this novel? Anyone who loves a good scare, a little humor and a crazy southern family full of witches.

Haunting Charlie Witches of Palmetto Point Book 1 edition by Wendy Wang Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This book and storyline is great! I couldn't put it down and read half the book in 1 day. I am from this area and find it very accurately described. HOWEVER, the editing in this book is awful! Typos on typos and an entire chapter (Chapter 4) missing page numbers. It's a shame because it really distracts from how smoothly the story is written. Hey Wendy, if you need an editor, hit me up! Whoever edited this book did your readers and the quality of your work a disservice.
Although clearly a book aimed at women, I stuck with it because I like a ghost story, and I like stories set in the deep south sea-coast, just because you so seldom find one. The writing was crisp & the story moved along. The characters were interesting enough that you cared about them. This wasn't Poe but it was a fun read. Like I said - perfect to take along on vacation for the beach or the porch. And yes, I'd probably read a sequel.
Loved this book! And, I just finished the second Witches of Palmetto Point book and downloaded the third one of the series. I hope there will be more Charlie books to come.
Wendy is a lovely writer. This series is so easy to read, and so hard to put down. All the characters (alive AND dead) are really interesting.
I just rolled my eyes when I read early in the book about how this is a family of witches, but I kept reading and it was a pretty good story. Charlie is an interesting, vulnerable character, and the plot was anything but tame. I didn't like the second book quite as much--too much witchy stuff and mooning over good-looking guys for my taste--but it too was an interesting story so I'll probably read the rest of the series.
I really, really enjoyed this book. It started out a little slow and the writing didn't grab me at first, but then around chapter 3 or so, I had chills running down my spine. Wendy Wang is so good at describing what it's like to be both a murder victim and a murderer that you feel like you are one. I didn't give it a five because I feel like the ending was rushed. The beginning and middle had great pacing and I felt my anticipation building and then it was suddenly just over. The events were satisfying, but I felt like it needed more.

I will definitely continue the series and am looking forward to more of Wendy's work.
I was expecting to hate this book, but I found it to be a fun easy read with an interesting spin on the paranormal. I loved Charlie and her cousins because they reminded me of my own cousins which is why this book works. The characters are relatable and it’s not all witchcraft and spells the average person can’t relate to. The characters live normal lives, work hard and love each other without question. It’s more of following your own path and being true to who you are. I’m so glad I gave it a chance, I read it in less the 24 hours and already have book two open in front of me.
I bought this one day when it was on discount for deals - I wasn't expecting much - I love the paranormal genre but have gotten away from it recently because I read too many books where the author tries and fails to balance all the parts of a good paranormal story that hits on multiple paranormal features - witches, psychics, and ghosts.

However, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It was creepy at times and had a nice balance of light-hearted at others. Not so scary that I couldn't read it at bedtime, but well written enough that if sleep wasn't forcing my eyes to droop I would just keep reading. The ending stayed with me and I may go back and re-read this to experience it again. I definitely bought the next one in the series.

I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because I would have liked to have a little bit more in the conclusion after the main ghost plotline was wrapped up. After spending the rest of the book hoping for the end we got I just feel like it wrapped up a little bit fast. Some kind of closure/ goodbye moment between Honey and Sugar - even just a look between them would have been satisfying. A scene at the house after the climax with an awkward are you ok, yes I'm interested in you/ watch the bad guy get put in the back of a cop car between Charlie & the love interest.

All in all, I would recommend this book to a genre fan and say it falls into the beach read / easy to enjoy and fall into category. If that's what you are looking for then give it a shot.
